What is atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is a condition in which the ""barrier function"" of the skin is impaired, due to which various allergens from the environment penetrate the epidermis and cause an immune system reaction. This reaction most often manifests itself as redness, itching, rashes and inflammation on various parts of the body. 

Atopic skin is usually dry and feels tight and itchy. It occurs most often in babies and young children, but it also affects a large number of older people. In newborns, atopic dermatitis occurs most often on the face, especially on the cheeks and chin. As the child gets older, the manifestation of atopy on the skin is localized mainly on the neck and in the skin folds around the elbows, wrists and behind the knees. Symptoms include areas of dry, very itchy skin, often with visible signs of scratching (scratching).

How is atopic dermatitis treated?

Prone to atopy skin requires special care to control periods of dermatitis flare-ups. It is recommended to use gentle detergents to maintain the skin's protective barrier, as well as very good hydration. It is also good to dilute the child's baths and not to use hot water, which further dries the skin. The good news is that for the majority of babies with atopic skin, these conditions outgrow and go away on their own within a few years.
